15.1. SEARCHING A JOB IN A GYM

LECTURE How will you dispel the potential employer's doubts and persuade him to say "Congratulations on hiring ...!"? Firstly by properly assessing the situation, secondly by preparing appropriately and thirdly by applying appropriate manipulation and persuasion strategies during the personal interview.
  1. Clarify what they ask for and what they ask for
Talk to people who are familiar with or working in the gym and gather information about the job offer, pay, working conditions and employer requirements. Compare what you gathered with your expectations and ask yourself:
  • Are you determined to work hard, even if you believe that this gym does not meet your professional ambitions and / or does not fully meet your qualifications?
  • Can this particular job keep your interest high, motivate you and satisfy some - if not all - of your ambitions?
  • Can you work with other employees and have a good relationship with them?
  • Do you find the working conditions and rules satisfactory?
  • Will you be satisfied with the salary offered, which is probably lower than your expectations, or will you start to mumble after the first half-year?
  • Are there opportunities, prospects and opportunities for career advancement, promotion and increase in your overall remuneration?

  1. Write the right professional resume
A resume is a mirror of your outward image and therefore a key means by which you present and promote yourself. Your personal resume aims to:
  • Catch the interest of the prospective employer (or responsible staff).
  • Get to know your prospective employer.
  • Take the next step, that of a personal interview!
The biographical [self-descriptive report] is structured differently depending on the "where" it is addressed, e.g. otherwise for job search and otherwise for postgraduate, continuing studies etc. However, your prospective employer (or recruiter) may feel embarrassed when reading a resume irrelevant to the job offer, when the resume is "blank" in content, or, instead, a rich resume for a job with minimal requirements. So review any resume you have made so far and compose a new one, as appropriate, from the beginning, correlating your qualifications and abilities to the position offered - see sample resume below.
  1. Seek personal contact
If you do not have a response to your job request or have been answered indefinitely with reference to the future or negative, try to arrange a personal meeting. With a face-to-face contact you will likely earn "points", your qualifications will be better evaluated and you may reverse the situation or open a future collaboration window.
  1. Show genuine interest
When it comes time for personal contact and interview with the employer / staff, you should always remember that no one is hiring someone who declares that "... this job is not what I really want, but I am willing to do it because I need to work ... "(... or meet for personal training ...). Even if this particular position in that gym does not correspond to what you are dreaming of, do not dwell on its negatives. Find and highlight the positives it seems to have, some that may satisfy some of your interests or some of your ambitions. Once you have decided that you want the position, you will find several reasons that you will justify your interest. Make a list of these reasons and read it many times so that what you say in the meeting / interview with your employer exudes complete confidence.
  1. Prove that you will not leave at the first opportunity
Avoid referring to other jobs that you have been suggested or interested in or your future "I want to open fitness" ambitions. "Amuse" your employer's concern that you will quit your job as soon as you have a better chance. Calm down his fears by stressing that you are interested in the job because it gives you the opportunity to truly work, gain valuable experience and develop your skills. If the position is much lower than your qualifications but the business has prospects, emphasize that as the gym develops, this position will become increasingly important and meet more and more of your ambitions. But by no means declare that "I am only interested in working in your own gym", because then the employer will probably think that you are hiding something.
  1. Do not constantly emphasize your qualifications
The combination of many and conflicting qualifications, studies and experiences can create intense concerns for your fitness. Employers are looking for landing people who will do their job properly, stay loyal to the company and not look elsewhere at the first opportunity. So show modesty and moderation, and make a discreet reference to the outline of your studies, without going into details you haven't been asked for and listing detailed titles, certifications, qualifications or work experience. Otherwise, all you can do is confuse (or scare) the person in charge and lose the job.
  1. Highlight your flexibility
Personal contact requires communication skills, diplomacy and a flexible ... repertoire. For example, highlight how much this job can help you gain work experience and work on what you have learned through your studies. Also show that you have a business mindset, that you can adapt flexibly to the differentiated needs of the gym, and that you can contribute decisively to your fitness efforts for more sales.
  1. Show your teamwork
Given that gyms are looking for employees who can work effectively within the team, focus on the need to work together, your team spirit, and the organizational skills you have when working with others. Emphasize in particular that you believe in teamwork and project accomplishments, that you have no problem following instructions and that you enjoy advising, as you learn and become better.
  1. Correctly determine your remuneration
Handle the matter very carefully. If the salary is given or you have been informed of the exact amount from the inside, try to negotiate it when you are offered the position and not earlier. When asked, answer "approximately" if possible and leave room for future negotiation, promising that you will make a review of your remuneration in the semester. If you are not aware of the remuneration offered, state the exact amount you think is based on market data. But keep in mind that this is a basic salary that you are happy with and that you hope to grow as part of a competitive package that will include productivity bonuses, percentages and other company / fitness benefits.
  1. Prepare your arguments and arguments
Prepare appropriate arguments in advance so that you can prove that your recruitment will be beneficial to the business. Also prepare counter proposals if the employer tells you that the position budget is inelastic or unable to pay you according to your qualifications or bear the financial burden. And if you can, give him some good ideas on how the gym can make more money from you, as well as some ways your recruiting can save him unnecessary costs and additional trouble.
