11. BODY POSTURE ASSESSMENT

During the first visit, it is recommended that the trainee is comfortably dressed in light clothing and before the evaluation, the Pilates Teacher should observe the trainee's walking, the holding of the bag, and even the way he or she sits, as these observations can provide important information about any existing muscle imbalances. Following, the Pilates Teacher will make a full assessment of the posture:

  1. Anterior-posterior plane (looking behind the client)
  • Head
  • Shoulders
  • Shoulders blades
  • Hands (length, shape, distance from torso).
  • Pelvis
  • Buttocks
  • Leg shape (varus or valgus).
  • Muscle shape in hamstrings and gastrocnemius.
  • Achilles tendon.
  • Feet (placement).

  1. Anterior-posterior plane (looking in front of the customer)
  • Symmetry of the nose, sternum and pubic symphysis in relation to the ground.
  • Head
  • Clavicle
  • Shoulders (distance from the center to the withers on each side).
  • Ribs
  • Pelvis
  • Muscle shape in quadriceps.
  • Knees
  • Leg shape.
  • Feet (shape, toes, placement).

  1. Frontal plane
  • Ear lobe, shoulder, hip, knee, foot symmetry).
  • Spinal deviations (kyphosis, lordosis).
  • Placement of the pelvis (anterior/posterior inclination).

  1. Spinal mobility
  • Forward bending from a standing position (posterior femur flexibility, lordosis, muscle imbalances).
  • Thoracic extension from a standing position.
  • Turning (keeping the pelvis in a neutral position).
  • Side bending (keeping the pelvis in a neutral position).

Spine flexibility - Side bending Assessment from ditting position
Note: If the customer is unstable, the mobility of the spine can also be checked from a sitting position.
  1. Hip and leg mobility and flexibility
  • Flexibility of posterior femurs, hip flexors, quadriceps (from a side position).
  • Hip mobility (internal and external rotation).
